Breast Asymmetry
A difference in volume, shape or position between the two breasts is a common finding. It may be present from birth or develop later (through developmental differences, hormonal factors or previous surgery). Because the degree and cause of asymmetry differ from person to person, the treatment plan is always determined individually.
During assessment, the source of the asymmetry (a difference in volume or position, nipple position, differences in the rib cage) is examined in detail, and it is determined which methods — alone or in combination — can be used to reach symmetry. The patient's expectations are an important part of this planning. The methods used may include:
- Implants of different volumes for each side
- A one-sided breast lift or reduction
- Correcting differences in volume and contour with fat grafting
The aim is not perfect symmetry between the two breasts but a natural and balanced appearance — which also matters for realistic management of expectations.
